DISCOVERING THE TIMELESS CHARM OF SUNLIT LISBON

Lisbon: A City of Sunlit Hills, Timeless Charm, and Culinary Delights

Lisbon is a city that hums with energy, where history and modernity dance effortlessly through its winding streets. From the moment you arrive, you’re enveloped by its unmistakable charm—seven cinematic hills crowned with pastel-hued buildings, the distant clang of vintage trams, and the irresistible scent of freshly baked pastéis de nata wafting through the air. Every neighbourhood tells a story, each one with its own unique rhythm and personality.

Did you know?

Lisbon is the second oldest capital city in Europe, after Athens.

The best way to uncover Lisbon’s soul? On foot.

Step into the cobblestones labyrinth of Alfama, where time seems to slow. This is the city’s oldest quarter, a poetic tangle of narrow alleyways, weathered churches, and tucked-away restaurants. The tram tracks embedded in the streets whisper of centuries past, while hidden cafés and bars reveal themselves at every turn.

There’s a rare, almost nostalgic atmosphere here, something you don’t quite find in other European capitals. As night falls, the district comes alive with the melancholic sounds of Fado music drifting from intimate taverns. Many restaurants offer the chance to enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal while listening to this soulful, centuries-old musical tradition, making for an unforgettable, immersive experience.

All this inspired the creation of our Alfama scented candle, a tribute to Lisbon’s historic district, capturing its essence through a carefully crafted scent. Inspired by evening walks through Alfama’s secluded, stone-paved streets, this candle blends opulent notes of bergamot, tobacco, and amber with subtle undertones of cedarwood and cypress, creating a woody aroma that echoes the soul of those historic streets.

Lisbon’s topography, with its rolling hills and waterfront setting, offers endless vantage points. Climb to one of the many miradouros (viewpoints) to take in a panorama of terracotta rooftops spilling towards the Tagus River. The city is geographically well-positioned, making it easy to explore both the north and south of Portugal.

Nearby Lisbon , enchanting destinations such as Sintra—home to the breathtaking Palácio da Pena—and Nazaré, famed for its towering waves that hold the title of the largest in the world, beckon travellers. The latter, a prized spot for professional surfers, promises an unforgettable adventure.

A mere 35-minute drive across the Ponte 25 de Abril—engineered by the same minds behind San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge—leads you to Costa da Caparica. This sun-drenched stretch of sand is lined with beachside restaurants and lively bars, where evenings unfold with chilled cocktails, fresh seafood, and music that lingers well past sunset. During summer, festivals enliven the coastline, with June’s sardine festival offering a particularly local flavour.

One must-visit spot when visiting Costa da Caparica? Restaurante Princesa, where ocean views complement the exquisite dishes.

For a different kind of coastal adventure, rent an electric scooter and trace the city’s dedicated bike paths along the water. Glide past vibrant harbour restaurants, beneath the golden-hued bridge, and onwards to Belém. This historic district is famed for its majestic Jerónimos Monastery and its namesake tower, which appears to float atop the water. Markets fill the parks, and a small open-air amphitheater often hosts musicians, where you can sip a piña colada from a fresh pineapple while basking in the sun. It’s also here that the legendary pastel de nata was first created by Catholic monks in the 18th century—do not leave without sampling one.
